All eight Harry Potter films are set to return to the big screen globally from 27 August 2026 to 3 September 2026 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise’s cinematic debut. The week-long theatrical re-release will feature the original instalment, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, with an additional 10 to 12 minutes of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage included for audiences.
This initiative forms part of a wider ‘Back to Hogwarts’ 2026 campaign orchestrated by Warner Bros. to commemorate a quarter-century since the release of the first film on 16 November 2001. While the event is marketed as a global celebration, specific participation from South African cinema chains remains unconfirmed at this time, and we are currently checking with major distributors to see which venues will host the screenings.
The return of the films to theatres precedes the expected 25 December 2026 premiere of the new Harry Potter television series, which is set to launch on the HBO Max platform. This re-release strategy is designed to build momentum for the franchise’s expansion while offering long-time fans a chance to experience the original series in a cinema environment once more.
As of 14 August 2026, there is no official list of participating theatres in Cape Town or across the Western Cape. We will continue to monitor updates from local exhibitors and provide a follow-up report once scheduling details are finalised.
