Veteran South African actor and cultural icon Seputla Sebogodi was laid to rest in Polokwane on 25 July 2026, following a week of national tributes and memorial services. The renowned performer, who enjoyed a career spanning over four decades, passed away on 15 July 2026 due to complications related to diabetes.
Final Rites And Commemoration
Funeral proceedings were held at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane, concluding a series of memorial events that included a gathering at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria on 23 July. The final burial took place at the Silicon Cemetery after family, friends, and colleagues gathered to celebrate his extensive contributions to the country’s television, film, and theatre landscape.

Speaking at the service, Ruth Tladi urged those in attendance to find acceptance following the loss of the legendary performer. The event remained focused on his professional legacy, which included iconic roles in productions such as Generations, Suburban Bliss, and Scandal!.

The Limpopo arts community highlighted the void left by Sebogodi, noting that his mentorship and experience were expected to inform future developments in the province. Abel Kunutu, Head of Theatre at the Limpopo Arts and Culture Council, expressed the industry’s deep disappointment that Sebogodi would not be present for the opening of a new local theatre project next year.
We are here to celebrate this giant of television, theatre and film. We were hoping to learn a lot from him because in Limpopo they are constructing a theatre that will open next year.
