A 46-year-old man was arrested at Cape Town International Airport on Saturday, 4 July 2026, after police discovered approximately 50.7 kilograms of suspected khat in his possession. Law enforcement intercepted the suspect at the airport’s departure counters in the Central Terminal Building at approximately 12:20.

The arrest followed a proactive operation by police officers stationed at the transport hub, who identified the suspicious luggage while the individual was attempting to depart. Upon searching three suitcases belonging to the suspect, officers uncovered the large volume of the plant-based stimulant.
