Two men were arrested this week in connection with the illegal possession and installation of blue lights on a private vehicle, following a targeted investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS). The arrests involve a 40-year-old vehicle owner and a 49-year-old Mozambican national, both linked to an incident first flagged at a roadblock in Wierdabrug, Centurion, in June 2026.
Investigation And Legal Proceedings
The operation to apprehend the suspects concluded after police tracked the vehicle, leading to the arrest of the owner on 3 July 2026 and the technician responsible for the modification the following day. The pair was scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 July 2026, to face charges for contravening Regulations 176 and 185 of the National Road Traffic Regulations.
Public Safety And Criminal Syndicates
The illegal use of lights is a significant tactic employed by violent criminal syndicates, commonly referred to as the ‘blue light gang’, to impersonate law enforcement and intercept motorists. Speaking at a media briefing, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the national police spokesperson, emphasised that these groups use the equipment to hijack, rob, and terrorise unsuspecting road users.
The illegal use of blue lights has become a serious concern, as criminal syndicates commonly known as the ‘blue light gang’ have used them to impersonate law enforcement officers and rob, hijack and terrorise unsuspecting motorists. Anyone found manufacturing, selling, fitting or using unauthorised blue lights will face the full might of the law.
With the investigation ongoing, police are expected to provide further updates following the preliminary court hearing.
