South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton is set to feature in the crucial third Test against Australia at Newlands Cricket Ground, Cape Town, starting Tuesday, 27 October 2026. Rickelton returns to the squad following the injury-induced absence of fast bowler Anrich Nortje, with Kyle Verreynne retained as backup wicketkeeper.
Rickelton expressed clear confidence about playing at Newlands, a venue where he has excelled in domestic and first-class cricket. Speaking in Cape Town ahead of the match, he said, “I walked out here and I said to Kruger [van Wyk, Proteas fielding coach], ‘It’s good to be home’”. He reflected on his comfort at the ground, adding, “To come back to a ground where I’m very familiar with both red-ball and white-ball cricket, and where I’ve had some good success, is quite comforting for me.”
Rickelton’s best performance at Newlands includes a marathon innings of 259 runs, made over 10 hours in the New Year sun, underlining his ability to perform under pressure on this ground.
The South African squad announced on 24 October 2026 revealed little change apart from Nortje’s exclusion, which has prompted speculation around his replacement. While unconfirmed sources suggest a bowler such as Dane Paterson or Gerald Coetzee may fill Nortje’s spot, that detail remains unverified at this stage.
With the Test series level, the decider at Newlands is expected to draw an electric crowd. A report by the Australian Associated Press confirms that a sold-out crowd is anticipated for the first three days of the match, highlighting the importance of this fixture in determining the cricket world’s top Test team.
The match kicks off in one of South Africa’s most iconic cricket venues, known for its picturesque setting and challenging conditions for visiting teams. Rickelton’s familiarity with Newlands could prove a psychological advantage as South Africa seeks to clinch the series on home soil.
This third Test not only carries national pride but also impacts the global Test rankings. The atmosphere and stakes make Newlands a fitting stage for Rickelton to build on his past successes and help South Africa deliver an emphatic result.
