South African cricket captain Temba Bavuma has expressed confidence in the Proteas managing a mounting cluster of hamstring injuries ahead of their Test series against Australia in Durban. The first Test is scheduled for 9 October 2026 at Kingsmead.
During the third ODI against Australia in Potchefstroom on 30 September, batsman Tony de Zorzi suffered a left hamstring strain while fielding and was unable to bat. According to reports, de Zorzi is expected to miss the upcoming Test series. His injury compounds a growing list of hamstring issues, including injuries to pace bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman, and Kwena Maphaka sustained over the past month.
Speaking about these setbacks, Bavuma said, “Yeah, unfortunately, Tony, he has gone down.” He also emphasised the team’s focus on adapting to the challenges: “We just have to do what we need to do, right? There’s an opportunity for someone else to come in and do the business.”
Bavuma noted the team’s trust in medical staff and their recovery protocols, stressing a calm approach amid the crisis. “To be honest, there’s no point in getting more frustrated at the situation. That’s not going to help any bit,” Bavuma told reporters.
He added that the team will regroup ahead of the Test series with a mindset to persevere: “For us as a team, when we get together on Friday, the Test team, we’ll just have to make sure we lock in. And like I said, in true South African fashion, try and find a way.”
South Africa wrapped up the recent ODI series by defeating Australia 2-1, setting up high expectations as the teams prepare for the longer format. However, the ongoing pace-bowling injuries complicate selection and strategy for the home Test matches.
With the injury status of several key players still under assessment, the Proteas face an uncertain but determined path. Bavuma’s remarks reflect a team determined to adapt and perform despite the setbacks.
The exact recovery timelines for the injured players, including de Zorzi, have not been officially confirmed. The Cricket South Africa medical team continues evaluations ahead of the first Test on 9 October.
