MEC Raises Alarm Over Escalating Violent Crime in Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has voiced serious concerns regarding the rising incidents of violent crime in the province. This includes a notable increase in the number of arrests of law enforcement officers for robbery-related offences, including cash-in-transit heists.

As reported on August 24, 2023, Shongwe highlighted this alarming trend, stating, “It is not the society, or character, it is because they are naughty, they are greedy, they like things.” This comment underscores the growing distrust within the community towards those meant to uphold law and order.

Violent Crime Statistics Reveal Disturbing Trends

According to recent reports, the third quarter of 2023 saw Mpumalanga recording approximately 490 murder cases and more than 900 rape cases. This worrying statistic aligns with findings that show a rise in sexual offences, with rape cases increasing from 784 to 802, and sexual assaults climbing by 12.2% in the third quarter of 2025/26.

Additionally, between April and June 2024, over 300 individuals were murdered, averaging three deaths a day. These figures have highlighted the severity of violent crime, prompting heightened concerns among law enforcement officials.

Community Engagement and Police Response

In response to the escalating violence, Shongwe announced the introduction of community safety initiatives, including an “overall Friday” where police conduct checks at taverns to ensure patron compliance and safety. This strategy aims to prevent crime by increasing police presence in social venues.

Police Commissioner Lt. Gen Semakaleng Manamela has echoed these sentiments, expressing that murder remains a primary concern, as weapons including guns and sharp objects are frequently involved in these violent acts.

“Murder is our main concern, and in most of these cases, guns and sharp objects are being used,” said Manamela.

The rise in violent crime, coupled with the involvement of law enforcement officers in criminal activities, highlights a pressing need for community cooperation and continued efforts to enhance safety and security in Mpumalanga.

With the ongoing trends in violent crime, authorities are now faced with the urgent task of restoring public confidence in law enforcement and implementing effective crime prevention strategies.
