The South African Police Service (SAPS) has suspended five additional senior officers as part of an ongoing investigation into the Medicare 24 tender. This action follows the earlier suspension of nine officers involved in the Bid Evaluation Committee overseeing the contract awarded to Medicare 24, a company linked to businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.
Background of the Medicare 24 Tender
In 2024, the SAPS awarded a tender valued at approximately R360 million to Medicare 24, despite the company’s lack of experience in providing medical services. The irregularities surrounding this contract have led to significant scrutiny regarding the procurement processes within SAPS.
Current Investigations and Arrests
As part of the investigations, 12 senior police officers and a company director were arrested in March 2026, facing serious charges including fraud, corruption, and money laundering. The case against Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and suspended National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola is scheduled for a court appearance on June 26, 2026.
“The affected members have been placed on suspension pending the finalisation of disciplinary and related investigations,” said Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Brigadier Mathe further stated, “The SAPS remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct in all its operations.” Public reaction has varied, with some welcoming the recent suspensions, noting that they should have occurred earlier given the seniority of those involved.
