Andrea Johnson, the head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), is scheduled to testify before the Madlanga Commission on Monday, 13 July 2026. The commission, chaired by retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is currently tasked with investigating allegations of systemic corruption, criminality, and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Allegations Of Procedural Interference
The summons follows testimony provided to the commission on 10 July 2026 by retired Hawks Colonel Kobus Roelofse. Colonel Roelofse alleged that Johnson, during her tenure as a senior National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) prosecutor in 2018, interfered in an assault and intimidation case involving suspended Crime Intelligence official Feroz Khan.
Receipt of such sensitive information would enable the suspect to manufacture and tailor his version.
According to evidence presented by Roelofse, Johnson allegedly sent confidential case documents, including the victim’s statement and medical reports, to Khan via a third party using a private email account. Witnesses, including a Crime Intelligence officer referred to as Witness O, have claimed they were instructed by Johnson to facilitate this transfer and subsequently delete the electronic evidence.
Mandate And Scope Of The Inquiry
The Madlanga Commission was formally established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2025 in response to public concerns regarding the infiltration of law enforcement and judicial sectors. The inquiry gained significant momentum following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi regarding criminal influence within the state’s security apparatus.
As the leader of the IDAC, Johnson’s appearance is considered a major development in the commission’s efforts to restore institutional integrity. The proceedings have also touched upon unverified reports regarding the conduct of other senior investigators, though the commission’s immediate focus remains on the evidentiary trail established in historical cases like the 2018 Khan investigation.
The commission is expected to question Johnson directly regarding her involvement in the case and her adherence to internal NPA protocols at the time.
