Madlanga Commission Delays Testimony After IDAC Chief Hospitalised

The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head, Advocate Andrea Johnson, was unable to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Monday, 13 July 2026, following a medical emergency that resulted in her hospitalisation. Proceedings were subsequently adjourned after the commission received a medical certificate stating that Johnson would be unfit to appear before the panel until at least 15 July.

Commission Criticism Of Medical Documentation

During the proceedings, Commission Chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga expressed frustration regarding the documentation submitted on behalf of the IDAC head. Justice Madlanga dismissed the filing, stating: “It’s just one of those useless, so-called medical certificates.”

The chairperson took issue with the lack of specific clinical information provided in the document. This is not the first instance where the commission has faced logistical hurdles, with previous hearings marked by various health-related and administrative delays.

Commission Timeline And Procedural Scope

The incident occurs as the commission navigates a revised schedule following a formal extension granted by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this month. The new timeline provides the inquiry with additional time to process evidence related to systemic corruption in the criminal justice system, an investigation initiated under the tenure of KZN Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed the updated administrative deadlines in a recent statement. “The extension granted by the President sets an evidence deadline of Friday, 2 October 2026, and a reporting deadline of Monday, 16 November, to enable the Commission to close off topics it has opened up in the course of hearings to date,” Magwenya said.

The commission is expected to resume its hearings once Advocate Johnson is cleared for duty by her medical team.
