Four men were killed and a fifth remains in critical condition following a targeted shooting on the corner of Nita and Olga streets in Lotus River, Grassy Park, on the evening of Thursday, 18 June 2026. The victims, aged between 32 and 44, were gathered outside a block of flats when a vehicle approached and occupants opened fire on the group.
Investigation And Official Response
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed that detectives from the Anti-Gang Unit have taken over the investigation into the murders. No arrests have been made at this stage, and police are currently working to determine the motive behind the attack.
The victims were all sitting in front of a block of flats when a vehicle emerged, and the occupants opened fire on them.
Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has strongly condemned the violence occurring in the province. Speaking on the need for elevated security measures, she stated that law enforcement must utilise every available resource to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killings.
Community Impact And Policing Context
The shooting in Lotus River marks a violent escalation in the region following a similar incident in Manenberg just 24 hours earlier, which resulted in one death and six injuries. MEC Marais noted that the persistent nature of these attacks highlights the limitations of current, conventional police strategies in addressing gang-related criminal activity.
It is increasingly evident that conventional approaches alone are not sufficient to deal with the entrenched gang violence that continues to plague affected areas.
Provincial authorities are now under increased pressure to implement intelligence-led operations to disrupt gang networks that maintain a grip on Cape Flats communities. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide further updates on potential leads and strategies to bolster public safety in the area.
