MEC Sipho Hlomuka opens R83 million Siyakhanyisa Primary School in Zidedele

KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka officially opened the R83.2 million Siyakhanyisa Primary School in Zidedele, King Cetshwayo District, on 16 October 2026. The project, part of the province’s 2025/26 school infrastructure programme, created 59 jobs and aims to enhance educational facilities in the area.

The school construction and upgrade tender began in 2022, with a compulsory briefing session held at the Zidedele Village site in September of that year. Siyakhanyisa Primary was listed among 24 schools scheduled for completion during the 2025/26 financial year according to the KwaZulu-Natal education department’s budget vote statement in July 2025.

Inside Education reported that the new school boasts 13 standard classrooms, five Grade R classrooms, a media centre, computer room, administration offices, a staffroom, sick rooms, a counselling suite, a nutrition kitchen, ablution blocks, a guardhouse, fencing, parking bays, and sports facilities. While these details have not been independently verified by a second source, the extensive facilities reflect the department’s intention to create a safer and supportive environment for both curriculum delivery and extracurricular activities.

Addressing the opening, MEC Sipho Hlomuka said, “We are pleased with the work that has been done. We have a constitutional obligation to provide our learners with schools, learner support materials and the human resources they need to succeed.”

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education also highlighted that the project has helped boost the local economy by providing 59 job opportunities during construction, underlining the economic impact alongside educational development.

Siyakhanyisa Primary School’s completion is a key element in the provincial government’s drive to improve learning infrastructure in King Cetshwayo and the broader KwaZulu-Natal region. The new school will replace older facilities to provide a modern learning environment for local children.

Further verification is awaited on specific details of the facility and the wider economic impact, with Cape Flats News set to follow up on community and departmental feedback.
