A popular Bellville restaurant has once again set the bar for record-breaking culinary feats. Located in Stikland, Annie’s Ladies Bar recently made headlines with their extraordinary four-metre-long gatsby, weighing an impressive 65.2kg. The colossal sandwich was crafted by the restaurant’s in-house chef, Michael Steyn.
Owner Joe Redelinghuys expressed his excitement about the event.
“Wow, what an experience, we got to feed 140 people on Saturday after creating this monster of a gatsby,”
he said.

Joe, 63, and his wife Annie, 64, have a history of setting records. In 2019, they made news by serving a gigantic 79.5kg burger, surpassing the previous Guinness World Record of 74.6kg. That burger was sold at their store for R13,950.
A month before this, The GrillFather in Mitchells Plain had broken the South African record for the biggest burger with their Goliath & Goliath Tsek Burger, which weighed 19.6kg.
For their latest feat, the couple from Penhill invited 100 witnesses to witness the historic event. On Saturday, they laid out four specially-made buns, each measuring four metres, and filled them with a variety of ingredients including fried egg, calamari strips, slap chips, sauces, chicken fillets, masala steak, Annie’s Patties, Russians, Viennas, polony, onion, tomato, and lettuce.
Annie extended an invitation to the public to join them and enjoy the gatsby for free.
“The idea for the gatsby came from bar talk,”
Annie shared with the Daily Voice.
“We just spoke about it randomly and we also wanted to do this to make people aware that we are now serving gatsbies on our menu. We were three people who prepared the gatsby. We started preparation at 2pm on Saturday and ended at 6pm, ready to eat.”
Joe added,
“We can’t say for sure that it is a world record, but we can confidently say it’s the biggest gatsby made in South Africa. The total cost of making this gatsby is R2,750 for the ingredients used. This attempt was made possible by our brilliant chef Michael. We did this for fun and it proved to be a great success. Above all, we enjoyed putting this monster together.”
The staff assisted by lining up the buns on a long counter table where chef Michael added all the meaty trimmings to complete the juicy delight.
Time for the Cape Flats restaurants challenge the reigning champions.
