Suliman Carrim Remanded Over Weekend After Arrest for Madlanga Commission No-Show

Suliman Carrim, a North West businessman and former ANC regional treasurer, was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on the evening of Thursday, 15 October 2026, just before boarding an international flight. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed his arrest was due to Carrim’s failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Following his arrest, Carrim appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on 16 October facing charges of contravening the Commissions Act. The court postponed his bail proceedings to Monday, 19 October 2026, meaning Carrim will remain in custody over the weekend.

The state requested a postponement to verify travel documents presented by Carrim’s defence team. His legal representative, Advocate Hendrik Potgieter, argued that Carrim suffers from a heart condition, warning that the ongoing court process and detention could trigger a panic attack.

Speaking in court, Carrim acknowledged his health struggles but declared, “I was getting better; I must be honest with you. I was getting better.” He added that due to his condition, “My wife had become my deponent and she had been doing most of the affidavits on my behalf to the commission.”

Brigadier Mathe reiterated the reason for Carrim’s arrest: “The suspect was arrested for failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.”

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, a high-profile investigation, summonses witnesses for testimony on sensitive political and administrative matters. Failure to appear can lead to charges under the Commissions Act, as in Carrim’s case. His arrest at the airport underscores concerns about flight risk and compliance among those subpoenaed.

While some reports suggest Carrim was carrying international flight tickets and was intending to travel abroad, these claims have not been independently confirmed by multiple reliable sources.

At this stage, Carrim remains in custody with the next court appearance set for Monday. Cape Flats News will provide updates on any developments in the case.
