Businessman Tumelo Nku Continues Testimony at Madlanga Commission

Businessman and alleged informer Tumelo Nku appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on 26 June 2026, marking the 127th day of the ongoing probe into the infiltration of the South African criminal justice system. During his testimony at the Bridget Mabandla Justice College, Nku provided accounts regarding his alleged involvement in a significant narcotics seizure and faced rigorous questioning over his financial activities.

Financial Discrepancies And Evidence

The commission’s legal team interrogated Nku regarding the possession of R60,000 cash, which he claimed was intended for personal travel and accommodation expenses. However, investigators presented bank statements during the proceedings that contest these claims, suggesting a significant contradiction between his stated financial movements and recorded evidence.

Context Of The Inquiry

The Madlanga Commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in July 2025 to address widespread concerns regarding corruption and the influence of criminal syndicates within South Africa’s intelligence and law enforcement institutions. As stated by the President upon its inception:

The commission will investigate allegations relating to the infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates.

The inquiry, chaired by retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, remains a critical element in the state’s attempt to restore public confidence in the rule of law.

The commission is expected to continue its hearing of witnesses to further corroborate the extent of systemic corruption, while the legal status of various affidavits remains a subject of ongoing procedural scrutiny.
