Major-General Feroz Khan, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Deputy Head of Crime Intelligence, remains in critical condition at Milpark Hospital after being shot in Houghton, Johannesburg, on the evening of Sunday, 28 June 2026. Police reports indicate that unidentified suspects in a white Mercedes-Benz opened fire on Khan while he was driving along 3rd Avenue.
Investigation And Official Response
The SAPS has launched a high-level investigation into the incident, assembling a task force that includes the Gauteng Hawks, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, and the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the Acting National Commissioner has formally incorporated the PKTT into the probe to exhaust all leads.
The Acting National Commissioner has further directed that the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) be incorporated into the investigation to ensure that every possible lead is pursued and that those responsible are brought to book.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the motive behind the attack. Speaking on the sensitivity of the investigation, Mathe stated: “While SAPS is aware of public speculation regarding the timing of the attack, it is premature and irresponsible to speculate on any possible motive or to conclude that the incident is linked to his anticipated appearance before the Commission. Detectives will follow evidence wherever it leads.”
Context And Legal Standing
The shooting occurs at a sensitive time for the senior official, who was scheduled to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 1 July 2026 regarding allegations of corruption and illicit trade. Khan is currently on suspension and faces separate pending criminal charges related to the possession of illicit precious metals, having previously been arrested by the PKTT on 10 May 2026.
The Madlanga Commission is currently investigating broader systemic issues within the SAPS, including the illegal tobacco trade and alleged political interference within the force. Following the attempt on his life, investigators are expected to review whether his scheduled testimony holds any relevance to the shooting as they continue processing forensic evidence from the scene.
