7-Hour Power Disruption to Impact Parts of Cape Town

The City of Cape Town has announced that an essential interruption to the electricity supply will take place in several areas on Friday, 6 September, as part of scheduled maintenance work. This temporary disruption is necessary to ensure ongoing reliability and safety in electricity distribution across the affected regions.

Residents in Standfontein and Mitchells Plain should expect the maintenance to begin from 9:00 and continue until 16:00. The same maintenance schedule applies to parts of San Remo and Bayview, where work will also take place between 9:00 and 16:00 on the same day. The City has emphasized the importance of these maintenance activities in keeping the power infrastructure functioning smoothly.

The City of Cape Town’s Electricity Generation and Distribution Department will oversee the necessary work at a local substation. This maintenance is described as critical due to the complex nature of the infrastructure involved. As a result, electricity supply will be temporarily interrupted, and there is a possibility that restoration may take longer than initially projected.

The City highlighted the potential challenges that may arise during this process:

“Our teams will work as quickly as possible to complete all upgrades within the 9:00 to 17:00 communicated time. The maintenance work ensures a reliable electricity supply for residents in the areas,”

This statement reflects the City’s commitment to addressing infrastructure needs efficiently while minimizing the inconvenience to residents.

While the City of Cape Town aims to restore power within the communicated timeframe, they have warned that supply could return at any point during the day. It is crucial for residents to exercise caution during the outage.

“Residents are encouraged to switch off appliances as a precaution and to avoid damage caused by power surges when the power comes back on,”

advised the City, highlighting the risk of electrical damage once the supply is reinstated.

It is recommended that residents remain vigilant and treat all electrical installations as live throughout the duration of the outage. This precautionary approach is essential for ensuring personal safety and preventing damage to household appliances.

Should the power not be restored within the expected timeframe, the City advises residents to consult official communication channels for updates. These include the municipality’s website and social media platforms, which will provide real-time information on the status of the maintenance. Additionally, residents can contact the City’s call centre for further assistance before logging a service request if needed.

The planned maintenance is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the electrical infrastructure that services its residents. While interruptions to power can be inconvenient, the long-term benefits of a stable and reliable electricity supply underscore the importance of this work.
