The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) impounded 58 public transport vehicles for illegal operations during a week-long enforcement campaign that concluded on 10 July 2026. The confiscated vehicles, comprising both minibus taxis and e-hailing cars, were found to be unroadworthy or lacking the mandatory documentation required by the National Land Transport Act.
Enforcement And Compliance Operations
The operation targeted illegal public transport and by-law violations to curb lawlessness on city roads. In a concurrent enforcement initiative across Centurion and Akasia, officers inspected 146 heavy motor vehicles, leading to 46 being cited for non-compliance and 14 trucks being declared completely unroadworthy.
The TMPD will not leave any stone unturned when it comes to enforcement of the law in the City of Tshwane.
Speaking on the ongoing crackdowns, TMPD spokesperson Puleng Motholo confirmed that the department remains committed to strict road safety regulations. These interventions serve to address concerns regarding vehicles operating on unapproved routes without valid operating licences, which authorities state pose significant risks to commuters and create unfair competition for compliant operators.

This latest action follows a series of previous operations, including the impoundment of 30 minibuses in Pretoria West and the CBD in January 2026, and a similar effort on 19 May 2026 that resulted in 18 impoundments. The persistent nature of these patrols reflects a broader policy shift within the municipality to ensure public transport safety and adherence to municipal regulations. Municipal authorities are expected to continue these targeted inspections throughout the coming months to maintain road safety standards across the city.
