Cape Town is set to roar to life this weekend as Speed Classic Cape Town returns to Philip Kgosana Drive, bringing back the thrill of hillclimb racing to the Mother City after nearly six decades. The event promises a weekend of adrenaline, precision, and speed, but it also comes with crucial road closures, traffic adjustments, and parking arrangements that both residents and spectators must keep in mind.

A Weekend Of Racing Excellence

The much-anticipated Speed Classic Cape Town will unfold on a fully closed-off Philip Kgosana Drive—both inbound and outbound—on 25 and 26 October. Saturday’s proceedings will open with the Classic Car race, celebrating the timeless beauty and engineering of vintage machines, before Sunday’s King of the Mountain showdown brings out the supercars and modern performance titans on the 1.8-kilometre course.

Road Closures And Traffic Adjustments

Motorists are advised to prepare for significant traffic restrictions leading up to and following the event. Philip Kgosana Drive will experience partial closures from Sunday 19 October to Wednesday 22 October, when the outbound lanes will be closed nightly between 7pm and 5am. During this period, inbound lanes remain open, and outbound travel resumes during daytime hours.

From 5am on Thursday 23 October until 5am on Monday 27 October, Philip Kgosana Drive, Christiaan Street, and Service Road will all be closed to both inbound and outbound traffic. This full closure ensures the safe setup and operation of the hillclimb course.

To reduce the impact on weekday commuters, the inbound section of Philip Kgosana Drive will reopen at 5am on Monday 27 October, while outbound lanes will stay closed throughout the day to allow for the removal of event structures. Further outbound closures will occur between 7pm and 5am from Tuesday 28 October to Thursday 30 October.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes, including:

• The N1 in both directions
• The N2 outgoing, accessible via the City Centre and Nelson Mandela Boulevard (with Strand Street and Hertzog Boulevard connections)
• The N2 incoming, diverting onto Nelson Mandela Boulevard, taking the Strand Street and Hertzog Boulevard exits

Vehicle Access Permits will be issued to affected local residents who require access to the areas around Philip Kgosana Drive during the closure period.

Parking And Transport Options

Free parking facilities have been arranged for all attendees. Shuttle services will transport spectators from designated parking zones to the event venue.

• General Access ticket holders can park at the Civic Centre and Good Hope Seminary Junior School.
• Grandstand and Hospitality guests have access to free parking at Good Hope Seminary Junior School, with shuttle transfers to the main entrance.
• Guests with disabilities or special needs will find designated on-site parking at the CPUT Lecturers’ Parking area off Constitution Street, with shuttle access directly to the venue entrance.

Those opting for e-hailing services should set their drop-off points carefully:

• General Access and Grandstand ticket holders: Gardens Centre, a short walk from the pedestrian entrance at Jutland Avenue.
• Hospitality guests: 25 Jutland Avenue, Devils Peak Estate, Cape Town.

Event Schedule And Spectator Information

The gates open at 7am on Saturday, 25 October, and 8am on Sunday, 26 October. Saturday’s racing concludes at 5pm, with hospitality areas closing at 6pm, while Sunday’s finale and hospitality experiences will continue until 7pm.
