Soldier Slain In Delft Ambush As Gang Violence Claims Multiple Lives Across Cape Town

An off-duty soldier was shot dead in Delft late Wednesday night. The killing occurred on Kokaboom Street around 10:20pm, marking another grim chapter in Cape Town’s ongoing struggle with violent crime.

The 37-year-old victim, a member of the South African National Defence Force, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Investigation Underway Into Military Killing

Police have confirmed the deceased had no connection to Operation Prosper, the military deployment targeting gang activity on the Cape Flats.

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, police spokesperson, addressed the circumstances surrounding the incident. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” he stated.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased is a member of the SANDF who was off duty at the time of the incident and has no link to Operation Prosper.”

The suspects responsible for the shooting fled before authorities arrived and remain at large. Detectives have opened a murder docket, though no arrests have been made in connection with the soldier’s death.

Separate Salt River Shooting Leaves One Dead

Earlier that same evening, gunfire erupted in Salt River, leaving a 26-year-old man dead and another fighting for his life.

The attack unfolded at the corner of Burns and Pope streets, where a group of men had gathered. A white Bantam bakkie pulled up beside them, and occupants opened fire without warning.

Constable Ndakhe Gwala described the rapid police response that followed. Flying squad members acted on intelligence gathered shortly after the shooting, tracking down suspects believed to be involved in the ambush.

Three Suspects Apprehended In Salt River Case

Authorities have detained three male suspects in connection with the Salt River drive-by shooting.

Among those arrested is an individual already wanted by Woodstock police for a separate attempted murder case, suggesting a pattern of violent criminal activity. The wounded survivor was rushed to a medical facility alongside the deceased, though doctors were unable to save the younger victim.

Constable Gwala confirmed the legal proceedings ahead. “The suspects will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court once they have been charged,” he reported.

The back-to-back killings highlight the persistent danger facing residents in Cape Town’s townships and suburbs, where gun violence continues to claim lives regardless of military status or street corner conversations. Law enforcement faces mounting pressure to stem the bloodshed as families mourn and communities demand answers.
