A young child was rescued by residents in the Wetland informal settlement in Khayelitsha on 15 June 2026 after falling into a sinkhole that opened up beneath her home. Neighbours used ropes and spades to pull the girl from the cavity, which is part of an ongoing infrastructure failure linked to a bulk sewer line collapse in the area.
Infrastructure Failure And Community Safety
The sinkhole is symptomatic of a long-standing sewerage infrastructure crisis in the settlement that first emerged two years ago. Community leader Nandipha Mbendeni expressed deep concern regarding the stability of the ground, stating, “We fear it may expand further and swallow our shacks.”
Her body still aches.
The sentiment highlights the persistent danger faced by residents living directly atop affected municipal service lines. While the child survived the fall, her family reported that she sustained physical injuries during the incident.
City Relocation Efforts And Delayed Repairs
The City of Cape Town has identified 38 households requiring relocation to allow for major engineering works aimed at stabilising the area and repairing the bulk sewer line. However, municipal efforts to complete the repairs have been severely hampered by a lack of suitable alternative land for the displaced families.
The impasse leaves dozens of residents trapped in a cycle of instability, where housing remains precarious due to the ground’s degradation. Authorities are expected to provide further updates on potential relocation sites and a revised timeline for the necessary civil engineering intervention.
