Police will act firmly against illegal conduct at marches, says Dimpane

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane has declared a zero-tolerance approach to violence and lawlessness during public protests, pledging that law enforcement will take decisive action against any criminal conduct. The directive comes amid heightened concerns over rising tensions and sporadic violence linked to anti-immigration marches across South Africa.

Operational Preparedness And Public Safety

Speaking on the force’s strategy, Dimpane confirmed that comprehensive operational plans have been activated to maintain order and public safety during demonstrations. Police units are specifically monitoring mobilisations that target foreign nationals, as tensions in several communities remain elevated due to ongoing debates regarding unemployment and service delivery.

Operational plans are in place to ensure that law and order is maintained at all times. Police will continue to act decisively against any acts of violence, intimidation, incitement, destruction of property or unlawful conduct directed at any individual or group.

Dimpane, who has served as Acting National Police Commissioner since the suspension of General Fannie Masemola in April 2026, met with Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia in June to refine these security measures. While authorities maintain that the constitutional right to protest is protected, the police have signalled that they will not hesitate to use the full weight of the law against participants who engage in vigilantism or destruction of property.

Context Of Social Tensions

Protests frequently turn volatile when grievances regarding local living conditions serve as a catalyst for xenophobic sentiment and, in some instances, physical assault. By clarifying the police stance, officials aim to deter the escalation of these events while ensuring that communities across the country, especially those already experiencing economic hardship, are not left vulnerable to further instability.

Law enforcement officials are expected to maintain a visible and robust presence at any scheduled demonstrations in the coming weeks to monitor for potential incitement.
