Police increase presence in Mitchells Plain ahead of planned June 30 protests

Law enforcement agencies are ramping up security measures across Cape Town, specifically in the Mitchells Plain Town Centre, in response to various protest actions scheduled for 30 June 2026. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has confirmed that national and provincial authorities are coordinating efforts to ensure stability following reports of inflammatory rhetoric targeting foreign nationals circulating on social media.

Security Preparedness And Official Response

Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane stated that the South African Police Service (SAPS) and private security partners are working in alignment to monitor potential disruptions and maintain public order. While the area has seen reports of reduced activity as business owners prepare for possible unrest, officials have emphasised that the goal is to prevent any repeat of prior incidents of disorder.

We cannot afford a repeat of what happened on July 21, and in this case we also have situations where people are making inflammatory statements on social media. I’m hoping that as Dr Zulu was saying to me, June 30 will be a normal day, said Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia during a public engagement.

Addressing Deployment Rumours

Amid growing concern regarding the safety of the Mitchells Plain community, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has moved to clarify its stance on the upcoming demonstrations. In a formal statement, the military dismissed speculative social media posts suggesting the deployment of soldiers to manage the protests as false and misleading.

The South African National Defence Force has noted with concern misleading reports on social media suggesting that the SANDF will be deployed in anticipation of planned marches and protest action on June 30, 2026. The SANDF dismisses these claims as false, unfounded, and deliberately misleading, the organisation confirmed.

Authorities remain on high alert, with security forces continuing to monitor intelligence reports to ensure that constitutional rights of expression do not escalate into violence or the intimidation of community members.
