A Western Cape police captain involved in the investigation into the murders of former Knysna mayor Aubrey Tsengwa and two other men was killed in a shootout during a police operation at the Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road in Knysna on Wednesday morning, 26 August 2026. A 38-year-old suspect also died in the exchange, with two firearms recovered at the scene, according to SAPS Western Cape spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa.
The captain was attached to the Western Cape tactical response team and was part of an integrated operation acting on information about illegal firearms in the informal settlement. TimesLive and eNCA both independently confirmed the Sewende Laan location, the captain’s death, and the recovery of two firearms from the deceased suspect.
“At the time of the captain’s death, the police’s integrated team was executing an operation following up information about illegal firearms at Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road,” Potelwa said.
The captain had been part of the investigation into the killings of Tsengwa, a serving ANC Ward 8 councillor and former Knysna mayor, who was shot dead on 19 August 2026. Former Ward 7 councillor Mandla Matiwane and taxi leader Mandla Tyololo were killed the following night in a separate incident in Knysna, as reported by SABC News.
Three suspects had already appeared in court in connection with Tsengwa’s murder by the time of the captain’s death. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia told SABC News he had met the investigation team and was satisfied with their progress.
“I was assured that it is an effective team. They know what they are doing, they are following leads and already arrested three suspects who appeared in court yesterday,” Cachalia said.
The killings of the three ANC members within 24 hours heightened concerns about possible political violence in Knysna, though investigators had not established a motive. Daily Maverick reported on 23 August that tensions were rising in the town ahead of local elections, but no official link to political activity had been confirmed.
It remains unconfirmed whether the 38-year-old suspect killed in the Sewende Laan shootout had any connection to the Tsengwa, Matiwane, or Tyololo murders. The exact circumstances of the captain’s death during the firearms operation are still under investigation, and SAPS has not confirmed any link between the shootout and the murder cases.
