Nomangwane Mrwetyana Urges Unified Action Seven Years After Daughter’s Murder

Nomangwane Mrwetyana has issued an urgent plea for national unity and a transition from public awareness to concrete action in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). The call came during a memorial event held in August 2026, marking seven years since the murder of her daughter, 19-year-old Uyinene Mrwetyana, at the Clareinch Post Office in Claremont.

Uyinene Mrwetyana, a student at the University of Cape Town, was reported missing on 24 August 2019, sparking widespread searches across the Western Cape. Her death subsequently served as a national catalyst for the #AmINext movement, which drew thousands of South Africans to the streets to demand government accountability and safer public spaces for women and children.

“We cannot continue to just be aware. The time for talking is over; we need to move to action. We need to stand together as a nation to protect our women and children.”

The perpetrator, Luyanda Botha, was apprehended shortly after the incident and was sentenced to three life terms for rape, murder, and robbery in November 2019 by the Western Cape High Court. Following the tragedy, the Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation was established to continue the advocacy work started in her name, focusing on institutional reform and support for survivors.

Despite these legal outcomes, the anniversary remains a stark reminder of the country’s ongoing GBV crisis and the high rates of violence reported in residential areas across the Cape Flats and greater Cape Town. Advocacy groups continue to argue that while awareness campaigns are essential, structural failings in law enforcement and social support systems remain the primary obstacles to genuine safety.

The Cape Flats editorial team is currently seeking comment from the Department of Justice regarding updated safety protocols at public facilities following the 2019 incident. Further updates regarding the foundation’s upcoming policy proposals will be provided as more information becomes available.
