Musicians to host Mandela Day concert in support of Palestinian solidarity

A fundraising concert titled ‘Notes from Exile on Mandela Day’ is scheduled to take place at the Rondebosch United Church in Cape Town on 18 July 2026. The event is dedicated to raising funds to restore the music studio and instruments of Palestinian composer Mahmoud Abuwarda, who is currently living in exile in Istanbul.

Artistic Tribute And Support

The performance will feature a unique blend of musical compositions integrated with selected poetry from Palestine. The project has been curated by Tania Haberland and is being prepared under the direction of Megan Choritz.

The concert is framed by the enduring words of Nelson Mandela, who famously stated: “We know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.” By marking Mandela Day with this cultural initiative, the organisers aim to align the spirit of the day with global calls for justice and human rights.

Community And Historical Context

Mandela Day is traditionally observed as a global call to action, encouraging individuals to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela through community service and active solidarity. This concert follows a series of similar artistic engagements in Cape Town, including the 2025 ‘Songs for Freedom’ fundraiser, which sought to provide humanitarian relief to regions in the Middle East.

Organisers selected the Rondebosch United Church to host the event, highlighting the ongoing tradition of local faith and community institutions serving as platforms for international advocacy. Further announcements regarding ticket availability and additional performers are expected closer to the event date.
