A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment after the Carnarvon Regional Court found him guilty of raping his 42-year-old biological mother at their family home on 23 November 2025. The court convicted him on 28 August 2026 following DNA evidence linking him to the offence, and ordered his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, according to IOL and The Citizen.
Northern Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe said the victim was asleep when the attack occurred at the family home. "While the victim was asleep, she felt someone on top of her and realised that the perpetrator was her own son," Litabe told Taung Daily News on 2 September 2026.
The victim woke her husband, after which the accused suddenly got up and fled the house before the matter was reported to police. The accused was arrested after DNA analysis confirmed his involvement, as reported by Sahara Reporters on 1 September 2026.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane, speaking to The Citizen, described the offence as a "gross violation of trust and bodily integrity." He confirmed the accused had recently been released on parole after serving a sentence for a dishonesty-related offence before committing the rape.
Detective Constable Leevirne Nathalie Raaf of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit led the investigation that secured the conviction. The case was heard in the Carnarvon Regional Court, though some reports place the family home in Vosburg while others name Carnarvon — both small towns in the Northern Cape.
South Africa has long grappled with high rates of gender-based violence, with police and prosecutors regularly highlighting cases where victims are assaulted by relatives within their own households. The use of specialist FCS units, DNA evidence, and the National Register for Sex Offenders has become central to the criminal justice system’s response to domestic sexual violence, particularly where victims face barriers to immediate reporting.
The exact town where the offence occurred remains unconfirmed, with sources split between Vosburg and Carnarvon in the Northern Cape. Cape Flats News will provide updates if the NPA or SAPS issues further statements regarding this conviction.
