Local residents have increasingly labelled the site a “white elephant,” as the facility remains inaccessible for its original purpose. According to accounts from residents reported by the Daily Voice, what was meant to be a space for community upliftment has instead become a site for criminal activity and drug abuse.
“It is a white elephant. We were promised a facility that would uplift our youth, but now it is just a place for criminals and drug users,” a local resident stated.

The City of Cape Town has acknowledged that continuous theft and vandalism have crippled the facility despite the significant public investment. A spokesperson for the City stated that the municipality remains committed to the site but must balance the financial burden of persistent repairs against the ongoing security risks presented by systemic vandalism in the area.
The deterioration of the Lentegeur Sports Centre reflects a broader challenge for the City of Cape Town in maintaining public infrastructure, particularly in high-crime zones across the Cape Flats.
