Eltino “Malkak” Fortuin, a 27-year-old rugby player for Morningstar Rugby Club, was fatally shot in the head at Gabrielle Court in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, on Monday, 21 September 2026, around 12:05. Fortuin suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, left arm, and lower back. He was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel, police confirmed.
A second man, aged 20, was also shot and killed in the same block of flats shortly after Fortuin’s shooting. Both deaths are now subjects of a double murder investigation by Kraaifontein police, who have not made any arrests.
“Kraaifontein police registered a murder case for investigation following the death of a 27-year-old male on Monday, 21 September 2026, at about 12:05, in C-Block, Gabrielle Court, Scottsdene, Kraaifontein,” said Captain F.C. Van Wyk, SAPS provincial spokesperson. He added, “The circumstances surrounding both these incidents are under investigation. The motive for these attacks forms part of the police investigation. No suspects at this stage, the investigation is still ongoing.”
The Morningstar Rugby Club issued a heartfelt tribute following Fortuin’s death, describing him as “100% an MRC Boy” whose passion for rugby and the club will be remembered by teammates and supporters. “It is with great sadness that the Morningstar Rugby Club family says goodbye to one of our own, Eltino ‘Malkak’ Fortuin,” the club said.
Community activist Gavin Riddles condemned the killings, calling for urgent action to tackle the violence in Kraaifontein. “We totally condemn these senseless daily killings and shootings in Kraaifontein. More must be done and enough is enough. This is a murder and double murder too much,” Riddles said.
Fortuin’s mother, Janine Scholtz, spoke to Daily Voice expressing her belief that her son was specifically targeted. “We still don’t know who shot him and why. They were probably jealous of him,” she said. However, police have not confirmed this as the motive remains under investigation.
The shootings have rattled the Scottsdene community, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety in the area. Investigations into both murders continue, with authorities appealing for any witnesses or information to come forward to assist in solving the case.
