King Charles will confront Britain’s colonial past, including its role in slavery, during an official tour of the Caribbean from 27 October to 4 November 2026, Buckingham Palace confirmed.
The tour will include visits to The Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda, coinciding with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda from 1 to 4 November.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said, “The visit programme will therefore not shy away from ‘the darkest days of our past’, as His Majesty has described them.” The focus will also remain on “the vibrant present and promising future of each country.”
While the monarchy intends to acknowledge the colonial legacy and the atrocities of slavery, it will not offer formal apologies or financial reparations. These remain matters for the UK government, which has ruled out reparations, Reuters reported.
The King and Queen Camilla’s tour is designed to celebrate the diversity of communities, cultures, and natural heritage across the Commonwealth family, the palace said.
The timing and itinerary underscore ongoing political tensions around colonial history and slavery reparations within the Commonwealth, issues likely to emerge during the CHOGM gathering in Antigua and Barbuda.
Previous speculation about detailed speeches on reparations or visits to slavery memorials remains unconfirmed, with no publicly released itinerary beyond the announced countries. Buckingham Palace has maintained a tight control over the messaging, emphasising reconciliation without reparation commitments.
King Charles’s approach reflects a broader effort to balance historical accountability with contemporary relationships across Commonwealth nations, many of which continue to grapple with the legacies of colonialism and slavery.
The tour will begin in The Bahamas on 27 October, proceed with a state visit to Guyana on 29 October, and conclude after CHOGM in Antigua and Barbuda on 4 November. The Cape Flats News will monitor developments closely as the visit approaches, noting any announcements on specific engagements or statements from the Palace or UK government.
