The South African football community is mourning the tragic loss of Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs, whose life was cut short in a hijacking incident in Honeydew, Johannesburg, on Wednesday night.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, Fleurs, 24, had stopped at a petrol station on the corner of 14th Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Drive in his red VW Golf 8 GTI. While waiting at the petrol station, he was confronted by two armed individuals driving a white BMW 1 series. The assailants held Fleurs at gunpoint, demanded he exit the vehicle, and tragically shot him in the upper body. One of the perpetrators fled the scene in Fleurs’ car, while the other drove off in the BMW.

Kaizer Chiefs released a statement confirming Fleurs’ passing, expressing deep sadness and extending condolences to his family and friends. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is handling the investigation.

Fleurs began his professional career at Ubuntu Cape Town in 2017, later joining SuperSport United in 2018. He became part of Kaizer Chiefs in 2023 after his stint with SuperSport.
