The Department of Home Affairs officially launched Phase II of the Trusted Employer Scheme (TES) on 20 July 2026 to streamline visa processes for qualifying businesses. The digital program offers participating employers an exclusive online portal, reduced documentation requirements, the support of dedicated Key Account Managers, and significantly faster visa processing times.
Economic Expansion And Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for the second phase has been broadened to target strategic sectors, including companies managing large-scale infrastructure projects and businesses establishing regional or global headquarters in South Africa. Qualifying entities in the financial sector are also now eligible to apply for participation through the scheme.
Participating companies must meet rigorous criteria, which include evidence of meaningful capital investment within the country and a demonstrated commitment to skills development. Furthermore, these entities are required to maintain a workforce that consists predominantly of South African citizens or permanent residents.
The launch of a bigger and better TES is yet another marker that Home Affairs increasingly works as an economic enabler, rather than as a constraint.
Speaking at a recent government briefing, Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Leon Schreiber stated that the shift toward a digital-first department is intended to boost South Africa’s global economic competitiveness. He emphasised that integrating the scheme into the broader Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) platform is a central component of the department’s ongoing digital transformation agenda.
System Integration And Application Deadlines
The transition toward more efficient, automated systems is designed to replace legacy paper-based workflows that have historically contributed to administrative delays. Interested organisations have until 4 September 2026 to submit their applications for the current phase of the programme.
The department continues to align the scheme with the economic recovery priorities of the Government of National Unity. Further announcements regarding technical portal access and integration steps are expected in the coming weeks.
