Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy officially launched the National Truck Stop Framework at the Sasol N17 Truck Stop in Mpumalanga on 17 September 2026. The new policy establishes a coordinated national approach to the planning, development, management, and standardisation of truck stop facilities across South Africa.
Department of Transport research highlighted severe deficiencies currently affecting the freight sector, including inadequate and unsafe parking, poor lighting, and insufficient ablution facilities. Further investigations identified a lack of wellness services for drivers and a failure to implement gender-responsive design, creating significant barriers for women in the industry.

Assessments conducted by the SaferStops Association, which evaluated 179 facilities, found that only 39 of the 137 sites classified as truck stops currently meet the newly proposed security requirements. The framework aims to transition these locations into professionalized sites that prioritise the wellbeing of those operating on the country’s roads.

The road freight sector serves as the backbone of South Africa’s logistics system, yet it has long been hindered by high accident rates linked to driver fatigue. The move follows years of planning, beginning with the 2005 approval of the National Freight Logistic Strategy. The Department of Transport issued a tender for the development of the current framework in August 2023.
The framework seeks to address the dangerous practice of drivers parking on roadsides due to a lack of secure, equipped rest areas. By standardising these facilities, the government intends to improve national freight efficiency and address the safety concerns of long-haul workers.
Reports regarding a new digital platform for booking truck stops and the provision of free eye clinics at upgraded facilities remain unconfirmed. We are checking with the Department of Transport regarding the rollout timeline and funding allocations for these additional services.
