Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully contained a blaze at the Wa Islamic Senior High School girls’ dormitory in the Upper West Region on Sunday, 2 August 2026, preventing further destruction to the campus. The fire, which broke out at approximately 19:45, destroyed six rooms and displaced 138 female students, though officials confirmed that no injuries or casualties were recorded during the incident.

Personnel from the GNFS arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm was raised, employing a defensive strategy to stop the flames from spreading to the adjoining Hijirah House. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Grade II (AFCO II) Mr Isaac Kofi Obosu stated during a media briefing that the service is currently investigating all potential causes, including electrical faults and the misuse of appliances such as electric irons and charging devices.
