Ghana experienced a complete nationwide power failure on the evening of 29 July 2026 after multiple power generation plants stopped functioning simultaneously. The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) confirmed the total system shutdown, which left large parts of the country without electricity for several hours.
Investigation And System Recovery
A spokesperson for the Ghana Grid Company confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that technical difficulties within the generation sector triggered the collapse. The company stated: “The total system shutdown was occasioned by a challenge with our generation plants, which led to a loss of supply to the entire country.”
While officials have begun the process of restoring power to affected regions, the specific technical cause of the simultaneous plant failure remains under active investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed which generation facilities were impacted or the exact sequence of events that led to the national grid failure.
Energy Infrastructure Challenges
The incident occurs against a backdrop of long-standing energy insecurity in Ghana, where supply disruptions are colloquially known as “dumsor.” The country’s power sector is frequently plagued by aging infrastructure, critical fuel supply constraints, and ongoing financial difficulties that complicate maintenance and operational stability.
This latest failure highlights the extreme fragility of the national electricity network and poses significant risks to both the Ghanaian economy and daily public life. The government faces mounting pressure to address these structural issues as the country struggles to provide consistent and reliable power delivery to its citizens.
Technical teams are expected to provide further updates as the grid stabilises across the country.
