Eleven people, including five children and six adults, were killed when a long-distance bus travelling from Cape Town to Johannesburg overturned on the N1 on Thursday night. The incident occurred shortly after 21:30, approximately 24 kilometres north of Trompsburg in the direction of Edenburg.
Emergency Response And Casualties
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene where the bus, which was reportedly carrying about 60 passengers, had come to rest across the national roadway. According to Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Health, the death toll was confirmed on-site while 66 additional passengers sustained injuries of varying severity.
11 people are reported as deceased so far – 5 children and 6 adults – their gender and identities cannot be fully determined at this stage.
The injured passengers were transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment following the triage operations conducted by local paramedics. The damaged bus remained on the road throughout the night, causing a significant obstruction to traffic flow on the busy N1 corridor.
National Road Safety Concerns
The N1 remains a critical artery for transport between the Western Cape and Gauteng, experiencing high volumes of commercial and public transport vehicle traffic daily. This latest tragedy follows a series of recent fatal road incidents that have once again highlighted concerns regarding long-distance road safety and the oversight of public transport operators in South Africa.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the recovery operation concludes and formal identification of the deceased is finalised. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is set to commence once the scene is cleared.
