‘Dis Virrie Voels’: Man Arrested In Green Point With 3kg Dagga After Pigeon Food Claim

A man was arrested in Green Point, Cape Town, on Monday 8 September 2026 after Public Order Police found 3 050 grams of dagga in a 25-litre bucket he was sitting on — which he claimed was food for his pigeons. Security guards at a Green Point mall had flagged two suspicious men near the ATMs, prompting the police response, according to Daily Voice, which reported the incident citing SAPS spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala.

One suspect fled the scene. The second remained seated on the bucket until the K9 unit arrived and confirmed the substance was dagga. The suspect then produced a cannabis permit that was not in his name.

Inside the bucket were 3050 grams of dagga. The suspect claimed that it was food for his pigeons. When the K9 unit confirmed that it was dagga, he produced a permit that was not in his name. He was arrested for possession of dagga.

Constable Gwala told Daily Voice. The arrested man’s identity has not been released.

The suspect’s attempt to use a permit not in his name points to a grey area created by the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act 7 of 2024, which permits adults to possess and cultivate cannabis for private use but does not legalise commercial trade. Carrying more than 3kg in a public space near ATMs falls well outside what the legislation contemplates for private possession.

On the same day, police acting on intelligence raided a property in Storms River Walk, Manenberg, at approximately 12:50. A 19-year-old male was arrested after police recovered 309 sachets of crystal meth, 154 packets of cocaine, ten heroin straws and four Mandrax tablets. Constable Gwala confirmed the Manenberg details to Daily Voice.

The Manenberg bust underscores the persistent hard-drug trade in Cape Flats communities, where tik, cocaine, heroin and Mandrax continue to drive substance abuse and gang-linked criminality. Both arrests were reported solely by Daily Voice; Cape Flats News has not independently verified the details from a second outlet, and SAPS Western Cape has not yet issued a media release confirming the incidents.

The Green Point suspect is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court once formally charged, though a date has not been confirmed. We will update this report once SAPS issues an official statement or court records confirm the appearance.
