Over the weekend, American rapper, record producer, and executive Diddy faced intense scrutiny after a disturbing 2016 surveillance video surfaced, appearing to show him physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, Casandra Ventura. The video, released by CNN on Friday, has sparked widespread outrage and supports allegations Cassie made in a now-settled lawsuit from late last year.

Sean Love Combs, known as Diddy, posted a minute-long video on Sunday afternoon, addressing the incident. He admitted to hitting rock bottom and acknowledged his behaviour as inexcusable, yet failed to mention Cassie by name in his apology.
In the self-recorded video, the 54-year-old rapper offers a vague apology without directly addressing the victim of his violent actions.
“I mean I hit rock bottom, but I make no excuses, my behaviour in that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video, I’m disgusted.
“I was disgusted then when I did it, I am disgusted now. I went and I sought out professional help, I got into going to therapy, going to rehab.
“Had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I am committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness, I’m truly sorry.”
Despite his apology, Diddy’s video has been viewed 4.6 million times on Instagram, provoking mixed reactions. Critics argue that his apology is insincere and only motivated by the video’s release, highlighting the severity of gender-based violence and the ongoing struggle for accountability.
The 2016 video showing Diddy assaulting Cassie has further tarnished his public image, reinforcing his history of violent behaviour towards women.
Currently, Combs is embroiled in multiple civil lawsuits accusing him of being a violent sexual predator who allegedly used alcohol and drugs to dominate his victims. Federal agents have also raided his homes this year, intensifying the legal and public relations challenges he faces.
This incident underscores the pervasive issue of gender-based violence, with many calling for greater accountability and justice for victims. The video has reignited discussions about the power dynamics in abusive relationships and the necessity for society to take a firm stand against such behaviour.
