DA candidate shot dead in Dunoon

Sinovuyo Miranda Dyokwe, a 48-year-old Democratic Alliance (DA) ward candidate and community activist, was shot and killed in Mnandi Street, Dunoon, on Saturday evening, 20 June 2026. Police confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 6pm while the victim was returning home from a voter registration venue, where she had been assisting residents for the upcoming local government elections.

Investigation And Political Response

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that provincial Serious Violent Crime detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. According to police reports, the perpetrator approached the victim on foot, though no arrests have been made and the motive remains under investigation.

In a joint statement, DA officials JP Smith and Nicholas Gotsell condemned the killing: “The DA is saddened and outraged by the murder of our Dunoon Ward 104 by-election candidate and community activist, Sinovuyo Dyokwe.”

Sino was an energetic activist and helped the DA to its best-ever growth result in a recent by-election where she was our candidate. Residents in the community loved Sino and she could always be found walking the streets of Dunoon helping improve services.

Cape Town Mayor and DA federal leader Geordin Hill-Lewis expressed his condolences, highlighting her recent success in a March 2026 by-election where she helped the party double its vote share in Ward 104 to 16%.

Community Context And Rising Tensions

The incident occurred during a critical period of national voter registration ahead of the municipal elections scheduled for 4 November 2026. The Dunoon area has a history of intense political contestation and is often marked by service delivery protests and labor-related unrest.

The killing of Dyokwe marks a worrying trend in political violence, occurring simultaneously with the murder of ANC councillor Scelo Mleve in Gqeberha. Analysts and political observers have expressed concern regarding the safety of candidates as parties ramp up their campaigns. Detectives are expected to provide further updates as the forensics and witness statements are processed.
