Eleven members of the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) appeared at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on 7 August 2026, continuing legal proceedings regarding the death of 41-year-old Wayde Price. The officers face serious charges of murder, kidnapping, and torture following Price’s death in December 2025 during an interrogation session.
Legal Proceedings And Bail Status
The accused officers were initially denied bail before a Western Cape High Court appeal in January 2026 granted ten of them R2,000 bail, while the eleventh officer was released on medical grounds. The court later relaxed bail conditions to permit the officers to resume their professional duties in Manenberg, a decision that has drawn intense public and legal scrutiny.
Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nicolette Bell, expressed the gravity of the allegations while speaking at a media briefing in Cape Town. “A murder was committed while [officers were] on duty, heinously so,” Bell stated.
Investigation And Community Impact
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has led the probe into the circumstances surrounding the interrogation that proved fatal for Price. Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, addressed the matter during a public appearance, noting the internal tension the arrests have created within the force.
“I’m not happy that our members are arrested—but we’ll leave that to the courts and IPID investigation so we don’t interfere,” Patekile said. The case remains ongoing, with the next court date yet to be formally confirmed by the presiding magistrate.
