Police seize R200 million worth of cocaine at OR Tambo Airport

South African police intercepted approximately 250 kilograms of raw cocaine valued at over R200 million at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng on Sunday, 25 October 2026. The drugs were concealed in five luggage bags containing 216 blocks of cocaine, which arrived on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, according to police sources.

SAPS national spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the seizure and revealed that forensic science laboratory experts tested the wrapped packages on site, confirming they contained cocaine. “We can confirm that we have seized 216 blocks of cocaine,” Mathe stated during a media briefing.

The joint operation involved South African Police Service, SARS Customs, and the Border Management Authority working together to intercept the illicit shipment. National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola praised the coordinated effort, saying, “The significant seizure is a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts and the commitment of frontline officers.”

OR Tambo International Airport remains a critical entry point for contraband into South Africa. This bust follows previous major drug interceptions at the airport earlier in 2026, underlining ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing international drug trafficking.

While the origin of the shipment was reported as Brazil with specific reference to São Paulo, this detail is based on police accounts and has not been independently verified with flight manifests. At the time of reporting, no information has been released regarding any arrests or the identities of suspects involved in transporting the cocaine.

This latest seizure highlights the persistent threat posed by international narcotics networks targeting South Africa’s borders. The collaboration among multiple agencies at OR Tambo signals a strong response to disrupt these operations, which have significant implications for community safety and national security.
