A 36-year-old man was arrested in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday, 20 September 2026, in connection with 14 separate rape cases spanning over a decade. The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further identification parades, was taken into custody by detectives from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
According to SAPS Western Cape and national media briefings, the suspect was initially arrested for rape in 2010 but absconded after being released on bail. DNA analysis has since linked him to 13 additional cases of rape that occurred while he was a fugitive from the law.
Whilst out on bail, he allegedly raped seven women in Pongola, four women in Primrose and Germiston in Gauteng province, and one woman each in Paulpietersburg and Magudu policing precincts.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the suspect’s criminal history dates back to an incident in January 2010 in Mahlabathini. Investigators used forensic evidence to bridge the gaps between these disparate incidents across KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, highlighting the efficacy of the national DNA database in closing cold cases.
In a separate and unrelated development, a 46-year-old suspect linked to 14 other rape cases in the Cato Manor area appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court. He remains in custody and is scheduled to reappear on 28 September 2026 to face the charges brought against him.
