The Steenberg Community Forum held a free training session for prospective ward committee members at the Grassy Park Civic Centre on 18 September 2026. The session aimed to educate residents on the legal framework, roles, and responsibilities governing ward committees within the City of Cape Town municipality.
Ward committees serve as voluntary structures designed to bridge the communication gap between local government and residents. These committees act as formal advisory bodies that allow citizens to influence municipal planning, service delivery, and the prioritisation of local budgets.

The Local Government: Municipal Structures Act provides the national legislative basis for these committees. By empowering individuals to engage directly with their ward councillors, these structures are meant to ensure that community needs are effectively represented in the municipal council.
