Memorial for whistleblower Babita Deokoran unveiled in Wynberg

A memorial monument dedicated to assassinated whistleblower Babita Deokoran was unveiled at the Wynberg High School for Girls in Cape Town on 9 August 2026. The ceremony, which took place on National Women’s Day, honoured the life of the former Gauteng Department of Health official who was killed outside her Johannesburg home on 23 August 2021.

Honouring A Legacy Of Integrity

The monument serves as a tribute to Deokoran, who was an alumna of the school, and aims to inspire future generations to uphold ethical standards in the face of adversity. Representatives from the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation were present at the event to acknowledge her courage in exposing corruption.

“She stood for truth, for integrity, and paid the ultimate price for her courage. This monument ensures that her sacrifice is never forgotten,” said a representative from the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.

The Fight For Whistleblower Protection

Deokoran’s assassination occurred shortly after she flagged R850 million in suspicious payments linked to Tembisa Hospital, an act that intensified national scrutiny on the safety of those exposing state corruption. Family members present at the unveiling highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by individuals who challenge systemic rot within public institutions.

“Babita’s legacy is a beacon for all whistleblowers. We must continue to fight for the protection of those who expose systemic rot,” a family member stated during the proceedings.

While the monument provides a permanent site for remembrance in Cape Town, the broader legal proceedings regarding her murder continue to cast a long shadow over South African governance. We will follow up on any further developments regarding the prosecution of those involved in her assassination as information becomes available.
