Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, revealed the budget allocation during a departmental review, highlighting the scale of expenditure on non-national medical staff. Speaking on the matter, Mazibuko stated: “For the 2026-27 financial year, the department budgeted a staggering R612 719 892 for foreigners’ compensation.”
The figure underlines the reliance of the provincial healthcare system on international recruitment to fill existing vacancies in the public sector. Ongoing debates continue regarding the balance between hiring foreign expertise and addressing local unemployment among South African medical graduates.
