A formal inquest into the death of Anele ‘Anna’ Tembe commenced at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on 13 July 2026, marking a significant legal step five years after she fell to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had initially declined to pursue a prosecution in the matter during 2022 due to a lack of evidence. Following the 2023 assassination of her fiancé, rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes, and further public pressure, the matter was referred to a formal inquest.
New evidence introduced ahead of the current proceedings includes a series of text messages between Tembe and Forbes, as well as correspondence between Forbes and a lawyer representing the Tembe family. During the hearing, evidence was presented alleging that Tembe had previously indicated in private communications that if there were a future volatile incident, she would “do it for good.”
