A multi-agency law enforcement operation across Limpopo resulted in the seizure of illicit and counterfeit goods valued at approximately R77.9 million between 7 July and 9 July 2026. The raids, which targeted businesses in Tzaneen, Phalaborwa, and Mankweng, led to the confiscation of 162,072 items and the issuance of 37 non-compliance notices.
Operational Impact And Agency Coordination
The operation was spearheaded by the SAPS National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit, supported by agencies including SARS Customs, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS). Confiscated items ranged from luxury fashion labels such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton to illicit medicines, cosmetics, toys, alcohol, and non-compliant electrical or mechanical equipment.
This was a decisive strike against syndicates that continue to threaten consumer safety, flout regulations and damage the economy.
Speaking at a media briefing following the operation, Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba emphasised the severity of the illegal trade. The involvement of brand protection specialists and departments concerned with agricultural products highlights the breadth of the illicit market currently under scrutiny by national authorities.
