A 14-year-old boy faces six charges, including two counts of attempted murder, after he allegedly drove a black VW Golf 1 into a couple outside Glenhills Secondary School in KwaDukuza on Friday, 21 August 2026. The incident, which occurred just before 2:30pm on Uranus Drive, left Verosha Naidu, 41, with an amputated ring finger and her husband Nathan Naidu, 41, with head, shoulder, neck and back injuries.
According to the couple, they had confronted a group spinning the car near the school gates because learners were about to exit. IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick confirmed that paramedics treated the couple for injuries consistent with being hit by a car and transported them to General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital.
Nathan Naidu told The Post: “We told him to stop spinning the vehicle, as there were schoolchildren who would exit the school gate and they might be injured. He became angry and pulled out a firearm and pointed it at us, threatening to shoot us for speaking to him about spinning the car dangerously around schoolchildren.”
He described the moment of impact: “The car came at us at a high speed. There was no time to react or get out of the way. My head hit the windscreen and the glass shattered. I fell to the ground and sustained injuries to my shoulder, neck and back. Verosha landed on the road. The tyre went over her right hand.”
Verosha Naidu’s ring finger was run over and later amputated at the hospital. The couple’s three daughters, aged 12, 14 and 18, witnessed the collision and are now fearful of attending school, Nathan Naidu said, adding that he is the sole provider for five children and cannot work while injured.
North Coast Courier viewed CCTV footage of the scene, which shows the car driving at the couple, one victim thrown onto the windscreen, and the vehicle speeding away. The same footage was referenced by The Post.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that four males aged 14, 16, 16 and 20 were arrested the same day. Only the case against the 14-year-old was enrolled. The teenager appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August, on charges of attempted murder (two counts), reckless and negligent driving, driving without a licence, unauthorised use of a vehicle, and pointing a firearm.
The matter was referred to the Child Justice Court and the boy was released into the care of a guardian. The case is next due in court on 2 October 2026. The firearm allegation, which is based on the complainants’ statements, has not been independently corroborated by the CCTV footage and no weapon has been recovered by police as of Friday evening.
Aiden David, chairperson of the eThekwini district policing board, described the incident as “barbaric” and said it showed the consequences of removing guidance counselling from schools. “We began breeding young, uncivilised human beings with no direction or goals,” he said.
Statements from the police and medical services were cited in reports by North Coast Courier and The Post. Cape Flats News verified the court proceedings through the National Prosecuting Authority’s regional office on Thursday.
