Ocular AI, a San Francisco-based startup founded by Zimbabwean Louis Murerwa and his co-founder Michael Moyo, announced a $2 million pre-seed funding round led by Drive Capital on 5 October 2026. The company focuses on supplying training data and benchmarks for voice and audiovisual AI systems, positioning itself as an “applied AI data research lab encoding human expertise into machines,” according to its Y Combinator profile.
Both Murerwa, who serves as chief technology officer, and Moyo, the CEO, launched Ocular AI through Y Combinator’s Winter 2024 batch. Since its inception in 2024, the firm has developed datasets that test voice models in real-world settings, including their recently released Converse-STT benchmark which compares 15 speech-to-text systems using unscripted two-person conversations and public voice-agent clips.
Ocular AI claims to work with a global network of vetted experts and that its data supports frontier AI labs and Fortune 100 companies, although these customer and revenue claims are self-reported and not independently verified. Its recorded work spans full-duplex voice where AI models listen and speak simultaneously, as well as audiovisual AI that integrates speech, facial expressions, and gestures for better context interpretation.
Other investors in the funding round include Y Combinator, Alumni Ventures, 1745 Ventures, Orange Collective, MyAsia VC, and several angel investors, according to multiple sources. The investment aims to expand Ocular AI’s capacity to create training data, evaluations, and benchmarks that enable AI developers to improve voice and multimedia understanding technologies.
This breakthrough highlights African technology entrepreneurs making inroads into the infrastructure side of artificial intelligence, supplying essential data that powers AI research globally rather than consumer-facing applications. Independent sources confirm the founders, funding amount, Y Combinator involvement, and product focus, but company-reported metrics on revenue and customer base remain unverified.
The next key update will focus on Ocular AI’s expansion plans and verified data usage as the startup scales. Cape Flats News will continue monitoring this story for developments.
