The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has announced that applications for Grade R and student transfers will be available starting August 1, 2024. This announcement marks a significant step for parents and guardians preparing for the 2025 academic year.
Online Application Process via WCEDePortal
The WCED has streamlined the application process for Grade R and student transfers, allowing submissions to be made online through their official website: WCED Online Admissions. The required supporting documents for these applications include an immunisation card, identification (such as an ID, birth certificate, passport, study permit, or proof of application), and proof of address. In cases where documents are unavailable, a police affidavit will be accepted.
To qualify for Grade R, children must be six years old in the year they start school. Parents and guardians who have not previously registered on the online system must first complete their registration before proceeding with the application. The WCED has provided online video tutorials and step-by-step guides to assist with the process.
Transfer Applications for Grades 2-7 and 9-12
Education MEC David Maynier clarified that transfer applications for students currently in Grades 2-7 and 9-12 should be submitted directly to the schools where parents or caregivers wish to apply or to the nearest WCED office. This directive applies to students already enrolled in school and seeking transfers.
“Please note that schools can only capture applications for their own institution, but district officials can capture applications for multiple schools,”
Maynier stated.
The WCED application form, necessary for these transfers, can be downloaded from the WCED website and submitted from August 1, 2024. The same set of supporting documents is required for transfer applications as for Grade R applications, including the latest school report card.
WCED Education Submission of Applications
Applicants may submit their completed forms and supporting documents directly at the school. Alternatively, they can inquire about submission options via email, using the official WCED form. The department is currently finalising admission lists for Grade 1 and Grade 8 students, confirming placements for those on waiting lists.
Maynier urged parents and caregivers who have not yet applied for Grade 1 and Grade 8 admissions for the 2025 school year to do so promptly. For further assistance, parents are encouraged to contact their district office or call 0861 819 919.
